PSHE at FGCS

What topics will my child study in year 7, 8, 9 and 10?

Throughout the year, all year groups will be introduced to the following topics:

  • Relationships, friends and family

  • Diversity, Equality and Inclusion

  • Careers and finances

  • Being a good citizen

  • Staying safe online and in the community

  • Being mentally and physically healthy

  • Sexual Health, Sexuality and Gender

To ensure that all pupils receive age-appropriate and meaningful learning experiences, the PSHE curriculum is carefully differentiated across year groups. While all students explore the same core themes—such as relationships, diversity and inclusion, health and wellbeing, online safety, and citizenship—the content is tailored to reflect their stage of development and level of understanding. Younger year groups focus on building foundational skills such as friendship, empathy, and personal safety, while older students engage with more complex topics including mental health, financial literacy, sexual health, and future career planning. This progressive approach ensures that learning is both relevant and accessible, supporting pupils as they grow and mature throughout their school journey.

We have built the PSHE curriculum at FGCS to help students develop: self efficacy - the belief in one's capabilities to organize and execute the courses of action required to manage prospective situations; personal growth and development; resilience; acceptance; team work; and, to help students stay safe.

How can I help my child to excel in this subject?

In addition to discussing learning with your child, ensure your child watches a regular news programme, or keeps abreast of the latest news events via  a reputable news app. Going for walks in your local area and discussing the issues the community is facing and highlighting projects that people are developing to improve the area.

Are there any online resources?

Students are able to continue discussions around the variety of topics in:

  • Current Affairs Club

  • Debate Mate

  • Newspaper Club

How will my child be assessed at the end of the course?

There are no formal or informal assessments for PSHE for any year groups.
